Apply And Receive Your Federal Employment Identification Number

The IRS and the state identifies a business by their Employer Identification Number, also known as an EIN, or your social security.  If you are a sole proprietor, you can use your social security number, or you can apply for and use an EIN.  I advise my clients to apply and use an EIN even if they are not required to because given the option when filling out business forms, it’s safer to use an EIN than your Social Security number.

You MUST apply for and use an EIN if you fall into any of the categories below:

  • You hire employees
  • Your business legal entity is a partnership or a corporation
  • You are required to file a sales tax return with your state
  • If anyone you do business with requires that you have an EIN
  • You are a sole proprietor with employees
  • If you are a single-member LLC with NO employees, you are not required to apply for an EIN
  • If you are a multiple-member LLC, you are required to apply for an EIN whether or not you have employees

The fastest and easiest way to get an EIN is online at The IRS Web Site, or you can call the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933. If you apply for your number online, you will receive it in less than 15 minutes, provided there are no unforeseen issues.
